Kenya’s President William Ruto bows to pressure and withdraws controversial financial bills amid crisis.

Kenya's President William Ruto has yielded to mounting pressure by withdrawing a contentious finance bill following a series of deadly protests that left 22 people dead.

The decision to retract the bill comes amidst escalating tensions and public outcry over its provisions, which have sparked widespread criticism and unrest within the country.

The bill's withdrawal marks a significant development in Kenya's political landscape and underscores the power of public sentiment in shaping government decisions.

Mr Ruto said he would now enter into dialogue with the young people, who were at the forefront of the biggest protests to hit the country since he was elected in 2022.

The bill was passed by parliament on Tuesday, despite nationwide demonstrations against it.

Protesters broke into parliament, vandalising the interior and setting parts of the complex on fire. The ceremonial mace, symbolising the authority of the legislature, was stolen.

This event serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between policy-making and public accountability in the democratic process.
