‘A Tribute to Genius’: Gov. Alex Otti Unveils United Nigeria Airlines Aircraft Named After Chinua Achebe
Abia State Governor Alex Otti on Thursday joined aviation stakeholders to unveil two new Boeing 737-800 Next Generation aircraft acquired by United Nigeria Airlines, with one of the jets named in honour of late literary icon Chinua Achebe.
The ceremony, held in Umuahia, drew praise for both the airline’s expansion and the state’s growing role in Nigeria’s aviation sector. The second aircraft was named after the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe.
Things Fall Apart’ Author Honoured at 30,000 Feet
Governor Otti described the naming of the aircraft after Chinua Achebe as “a tribute to genius” and a deliberate move to celebrate African excellence. Achebe, who died in 2013, was the globally renowned author of _Things Fall Apart_ and a native of Ogidi, Anambra State.
_“When we honour Chinua Achebe, we honour truth, courage, and the power of the African story,”_ Otti said at the event. _“This aircraft will carry his name across Nigeria and beyond. Every time it takes off, it reminds us that Abia and the South East produce people who change the world.”_
The Boeing 737-800NG aircraft was unveiled alongside another jet named after the Obi of Onitsha. Both planes will expand United Nigeria Airlines’ fleet as it positions for regional growth.
Abia Airport Runway ‘At Advanced Stage’
The unveiling coincided with fresh updates on the Abia State International Airport. Governor Otti and Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo disclosed that construction of the airport’s runway in Nsulu, Isiala Ngwa North LGA, is now at an advanced stage.
Speaking at the ceremony, Keyamo revealed how the project evolved from a basic federal airstrip into a full-scale international airport.
_“When we came to power, I went to Mr. President and said, ‘Abia does not have an airstrip or airport in the whole of the South.’ He was surprised, and we ensured it was captured as one of our first critical projects in the 2024 budget,”_ Keyamo stated.
He credited Otti’s intervention for upgrading the scope: _“Credit to Dr. Alex Otti — when we scheduled an airstrip, he went straight to Mr. President behind me and said, ‘Sir, bring the money budgeted for the airstrip, I have counterpart funding. I will now make it a full international airport.’”_
United Nigeria Airlines Eyes Abia Hub
Otti told the gathering that his long-term vision is for United Nigeria Airlines to establish its primary operational hub at the upcoming Abia airport. The move aligns with Keyamo’s strategic blueprint for decentralizing aviation infrastructure.
_“We are not building an airport for prestige. We are building it for commerce, for cargo, for jobs, and for our people to connect with the world,”_ Otti said. _“Having United Nigeria hub here means aircraft named after Achebe will be maintained and flown by our sons and daughters.”_
*‘What Otti Has Done Gives Nigerians Hope’ – Air Peace CEO*
Air Peace Chairman Allen Onyema, who attended the unveiling, praised Otti’s leadership. _“You’re the pride of the South East, the pride of democracy, and the pride of Nigeria,”_ Onyema said. _“What you have done in Abia State gives us hope that with the right people, things will begin to work.”_
Onyema noted that Otti’s developmental strides have attracted national attention and inspired confidence in democratic governance.
*Aviation as Economic Catalyst*
The Abia State Government has positioned aviation as central to its economic plan. The airport project, first flagged off in December 2024, was born out of a partnership with the Federal Government. Instead of accepting a basic airstrip, Abia opted to co-fund a full international airport with requisite runways for larger aircraft.
Keyamo said the runway work is progressing rapidly and will boost cargo and passenger movement across the South East. Enugu is also set to launch direct China cargo flights, signaling a broader aviation push in the region.
Legacy in the Sky.
For many in attendance, naming the aircraft after Chinua Achebe carried deep symbolism. Achebe’s novels redefined African literature and challenged colonial narratives. _Things Fall Apart_ remains one of the most read African books globally, translated into over 60 languages.
By putting his name on a Boeing 737-800NG, United Nigeria Airlines and the Abia State Government linked infrastructure to identity.
_“Our children will see ‘Chinua Achebe’ on the side of a plane and ask who he was,”_ Otti said. _“And that question will lead them to books, to history, to pride. That is how we build a new generation.”_
The aircraft are expected to begin commercial service within weeks, flying domestic and regional routes. For Abia, it marks another step toward becoming an aviation and economic hub in the South East.
