Xabi Alonso to become Chelsea's new head coach

Chelsea have reached an agreement to appoint Xabi Alonso as their next permanent head coach on a four-year deal.

The deal was finalized after Alonso visited London last week and accepted the role. An official announcement is expected imminently, with reports saying it could come as soon as Monday.

Alonso, 44, replaces interim boss Calum McFarlane, who took charge after Liam Rosenior was sacked in April. He was Chelsea’s top target throughout the process.
The Spaniard has been out of work since leaving Real Madrid in January after a seven-month spell. Before that, he built his reputation at Bayer Leverkusen, leading them to an unbeaten Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double in 2023/24.

Chelsea acted quickly after losing 1-0 to Manchester City in the FA Cup final on Saturday. The club sits 9th in the Premier League and has struggled for consistency under BlueCo ownership, with Alonso set to be the sixth permanent manager of the era.

Alonso will now turn his attention to rebuilding the squad ahead of the 2026/27 season and is expected to be involved in summer transfer plans.
