Semi Ajayi Seals EPL Return with Hull City: Six Years in the Making.

Six years after his last Premier League game, Semi Ajayi is back where he belongs.

On May 23, 2026, the Nigerian centre-back played 90 minutes as Hull City beat Middlesbrough 1-0 at Wembley in the Championship play-off final. That win ends Hull’s nine-year absence from the Premier League and gives Ajayi his return to English football’s top flight.

For a player who’s spent most of the last decade grinding in the Championship, it’s the perfect ending to a long wait.

This wasn’t pretty. It was tense, cagey, and looked destined for extra time. Middlesbrough had 68% possession and finished seven points above Hull in the regular season. But Hull defended like their lives depended on it.

Ajayi, operating in a back three alongside John Egan and Charlie Hughes, was everywhere. He cleared danger, won aerial duels, and kept Middlesbrough’s attackers quiet all afternoon. WhoScored gave him a 6.9, Sofascore a 6.8.

The winner came in the 95th minute. Oli McBurnie pounced on a goalkeeping error and buried it. Pandemonium. Hull were back in the Premier League for the first time since 2016/17.

And Ajayi? He played every minute of both semi-final legs and the final without conceding a single goal.
At 32, Ajayi has been one of the Championship’s most consistent defenders for years. He spent six seasons at West Brom, making 170 appearances and even scoring at Anfield against Liverpool in 2020/21. But top-flight football always felt just out of reach.

Last summer he joined Hull on a free transfer after leaving West Brom. It was a gamble. Hull had narrowly avoided relegation to League One the year before and were dealing with financial problems and a transfer embargo.

Ajayi backed himself. He made 24 league appearances, scored once, and became one of the leaders in a young Hull side. His aerial dominance and composure gave manager Sergej Jakirovic the stability needed to turn things around.

Now he’s a Premier League player again
This promotion is wild when you look at where Hull were 12 months ago. They stayed up on goal difference and started this season under a transfer embargo. Owner Acun Ilicali called the Wembley win “the best day” of his life.

The final itself was overshadowed by the “Spygate” controversy. Southampton were expelled from the play-offs for illegally filming Middlesbrough’s training session, handing Boro a place in the final. But Hull didn’t care. They did their job.

Promotion is worth at least £205m to Hull over the next three seasons. If they survive, that number rises to £365m.

Hull join Coventry City and Ipswich Town as the three promoted sides for the 2026/27 Premier League season. For Ajayi, it’s another chance to prove he belongs at the top level.

He’ll also carry that form into Nigeria duty. The Super Eagles defender has 55 caps and is in Eric Chelle’s squad for next month’s friendlies. With 2027 AFCON qualifiers starting soon, Ajayi is expected to be a key figure for both club and country.

He becomes the second Super Eagles player to secure Premier League promotion this season after Frank Onyeka with Coventry.

Ajayi’s story is one of persistence. From Charlton’s academy to loans at Dartford, Crewe, and Rotherham, to becoming a Championship stalwart, he’s never taken the easy route.

Now, at 32, he gets another shot at the Premier League. And this time, he’s doing it as a leader, not just a squad player.

Hull fans will hope he’s the anchor that keeps them up. Ajayi will just be glad to be back.

From relegation scraps to Wembley glory. Semi Ajayi’s return to the Premier League is fully earned.
