PSG Retain Champions League Crown After Shootout Heartbreak for Arsenal

Paris Saint-Germain are champions of Europe again.

Luis Enrique’s side defeated Arsenal 4-3 on penalties at the Puskas Arena in Budapest on Saturday night, retaining the Champions League after a tense 1-1 draw through 120 minutes. It is PSG’s second consecutive European title and the first time any club has gone back-to-back since Real Madrid’s three-peat from 2016 to 2018.

First Half: Havertz Strikes Early

Arsenal, chasing their first Champions League trophy, started fast. Kai Havertz smashed Arsenal into an early lead in the 6th minute, capitalizing on a defensive mix-up to beat Matvey Safonov.

Mikel Arteta’s side pressed PSG relentlessly. Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard dictated tempo while PSG struggled for rhythm. The French champions’ best chance came when 17-year-old Myles Lewis-Skelly blocked a Khvicha Kvaratskhelia shot onto the post. Half-time: Arsenal 1-0 PSG.

PSG came out transformed after the break. The equalizer arrived on 65 minutes. Kvaratskhelia was fouled in the box by Arsenal’s Cristhian Mosquera, and Ousmane Dembélé buried the penalty to make it 1-1.

Arsenal had late penalty appeals waved away in extra time. Neither side could find a winner in 90 minutes, and extra time also finished goalless. For the first time since 2016, the Champions League final went to penalties.

The Shootout: Gabriel’s Agony

The shootout was cruel and clinical:

*PSG*: Vitinha ✓, Dembélé ✓, Kvaratskhelia ✓, Mendes ✗ saved by David Raya, Beraldo ✓
*Arsenal*: Ødegaard ✓, Saka ✓, Rice ✓, Eze ✗ wide of Safonov's net, Gabriel ✗ high over the bar

Left-footed Brazilian Lucas Beraldo tucked PSG’s fifth into the corner with Raya going the wrong direction. Gabriel had to score to keep Arsenal alive, but sent his shot high. PSG won 4-3 on penalties.

For the second time in two seasons, captain Marquinhos hoisted the trophy above his head. Luis Enrique now has three Champions League titles as a manager.

“It’s stronger than last year because we knew before the match just how difficult it would be to play against Arsenal,” Luis Enrique said. “As a club and a city, it’s incredible to win, and I think we deserved it over the course of the season. The final was a real battle”.

Arsenal: Proud But Hurting

The Arsenal players were inconsolable. They led for 60 minutes and went toe-to-toe with the holders, but the wait for their maiden Champions League title goes on. It is the second final Arsenal have lost after 2006.

Arsenal won their first Premier League title since 2003-04 this season but continue their quest for a first European title. Many players will now head to their national teams for the 2026 World Cup this summer.

Long dismissed as underachievers, PSG have forged a dynasty under Luis Enrique, marrying attacking brilliance with resilience. They become the first club to retain the trophy since Real Madrid.

Celebrations erupted in Paris and at Roland Garros, where horns honked as fans flocked to the Parc des Princes. PSG will now look to join Real Madrid as three-peat champions.

In the end all the resistance, the resilience, the sweat and suffering were not quite enough,” wrote Jonathan Northcroft. “12 yards, one kick — it was all they needed — but for Arsenal the waiting goes on”.

Final Score: PSG 1-1 Arsenal. PSG win 4-3 on penalties.
