Mourinho Returns: Real Madrid Turns to 'The Special One' Again.

JosĂ© Mourinho is back at the Santiago BernabĂ©u.

Real Madrid confirmed late Sunday that the 63-year-old Portuguese manager has signed a two-year deal to take over as head coach, replacing Carlo Ancelotti who departs after lifting the 2025/26 La Liga title. It’s Mourinho’s second stint with Los Blancos, 13 years after his turbulent but trophy-laden first spell from 2010 to 2013.

The agreement was finalized in Madrid on Saturday night after a whirlwind 48 hours. Ancelotti had already agreed to take the Brazil national team job post-Copa América, leaving Pérez with a short list: Xabi Alonso, Zinedine Zidane, and Mourinho.

Alonso chose to stay at Leverkusen for another year. Zidane, according to club sources, was “not convinced by the project.” That left Mourinho, who had been without a club since leaving Fenerbahçe in April.

Terms of the deal: Two years until June 2028, with an option for a third. Salary is reportedly €12m net per year, making him the highest-paid manager in club history. His staff includes long-time assistants Rui Faria, Silvino Louro, and Ricardo Formosinho.

Florentino PĂ©rez called it “a reunion built on respect and ambition” during Monday’s unveiling. “JosĂ© knows this club. He knows how to win here. We need his character for what comes next.”

Mourinho’s first Madrid era was iconic and divisive. He arrived in 2010 after winning the Champions League with Inter. In three seasons he delivered:

- La Liga 2011/12, with a record 100 points and 121 goals
- Copa del Rey 2011, beating Barcelona at Mestalla
- Supercopa de España 2012

But it ended in flames: fallout with Casillas, Ramos, and the Spanish press. He left in 2013 saying “the worst season of my career.” Yet he laid the foundation for Ancelotti’s La DĂ©cima in 2014. Cristiano Ronaldo called him “the coach who taught us how to suffer and win.

1. Champions League hunger: Madrid lost to Arsenal 1-0 in the 2026 final on Saturday. The board wants the 16th UCL immediately. Mourinho has 2 UCL titles and 5 European finals.
2. *Dressing room control*: With veterans Modrić and Kroos gone and young stars like Bellingham, Arda GĂŒler, and Endrick needing structure, PĂ©rez wants a strong hand. Mourinho’s man-management with elite talent is proven.
3. *The MbappĂ© factor*: Kylian MbappĂ© reportedly backed the move. The two have a close relationship since PSG talks in 2017. Mourinho’s pitch: “I’ll build the team around you to win the Ballon d’Or.”

Ancelotti’s Madrid played free-flowing 4-3-3. Expect Mourinho to revert to a compact 4-2-3-1. He’s already asked for a defensive midfielder and a physical center-back. Sources say Madrid will accelerate moves for Benfica’s JoĂŁo Neves and Lille’s Leny Yoro.

In his first press conference, Mourinho was classic JosĂ©: “I’m not here for TikTok football. I’m here to win. At Madrid, second is the first loser. We will defend like a family and attack like brothers.”

He also fired a shot at Barcelona: “I heard they’re celebrating our loss. Good. I like them happy. It won’t last.”

Madridistas are divided. #MourinhoOut trended in 2013. Today, #MourinhoBack is trending.

Supporters point to his La Liga 100-point season and his record against Barcelona: 11 wins in 27 ClĂĄsicos. Detractors fear the drama, the bus-parking, and another civil war with the press.

Former captain Sergio Ramos posted: “Back to where you belong, Mister. Hala Madrid.” Iker Casillas, notably, has said nothing.

Mourinho’s first game is the Club World Cup semifinal on June 18. Then a U.S. preseason tour, including a ClĂĄsico vs Barcelona in Las Vegas on July 27. La Liga kicks off August 16.

His first Clåsico at the Bernabéu will be October 25. Circle it.

This is vintage Florentino: high risk, high drama, high reward. Mourinho at 63 is older, grayer, but says he’s “more balanced, less wars, same hunger.”

He inherits a squad that just won La Liga but lost a Champions League final. The mandate is clear: Win No. 16 in Europe. Anything less is failure.

Love him or hate him, the Bernabéu will not be boring. The Special One is back. The soap opera returns.
