Frank Onyeka’s Coventry City Seal Premier League Return After 25 Years

Nigeria’s Frank Onyeka is Premier League bound — again. The Super Eagles midfielder has helped Coventry City end a 25-year wait for top-flight football after the Sky Blues clinched automatic promotion to the Premier League on Friday, April 18, 2026.

Coventry secured promotion with a 1-1 draw away at Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park. The result put them 10 points clear at the top of the Championship with games to spare, confirming their return to the Premier League for the first time since 2001.

Bobby Thomas headed in an 84th-minute equalizer from a Victor Torp free-kick to spark wild celebrations among over 7,000 traveling fans. The Sky Blues finished the season as Champions with 92 points, 27 wins, 11 draws, and 7 losses.

Frank Onyeka, 28, joined Coventry on loan from Brentford on February 2, 2026. The deal included an obligation to buy if Coventry won promotion — which they now have.

Nicknamed “Frank the Tank”, Onyeka became the engine of Frank Lampard’s midfield. He made 13 league appearances, with Coventry losing just once when he played. His debut came in a 3-1 win over Middlesbrough, and Lampard described his performance as “outstanding”.

The Nigerian earned Man of the Match in a 2-0 win over West Brom, recording 4 tackles, 3 clearances, and 1 interception. He also broke a two-year goal drought on April 3, scoring a long-range strike in a crucial 3-2 win over Derby County.

Teammate Jack Rudoni hailed his impact: “He’s a top player. He’s played many games in the Premier League, so he brings that experience”.

Coventry’s rise has been dramatic. Relegated from the Premier League in 2001, the club fell to League Two by 2017. Back-to-back promotions in 2018 and 2020 brought them back to the Championship, and after losing the 2023 playoff final to Luton Town, they’ve finally gone up automatically.

Manager Frank Lampard oversaw an unbeaten 12-game run to start 2025/26, with Onyeka’s “combative midfield presence” becoming “emblematic of their grit”.

With promotion sealed, Onyeka’s move will be made permanent for a fee reported around €7 million. Lampard sees him as “a key part of the squad heading into their first Premier League campaign in 25 years”.

Reacting on X, Onyeka wrote: _“History doesn’t happen overnight… it takes 25 years. Promotion. Champions. Proud to play a part in something special”_.

The Super Eagles official account also celebrated: _“Congratulations to Coventry City and Frank Onyeka on securing promotion to the Premier League! Well deserved πŸ‘ŠπŸΎ”_. f15a

Coventry City are back. And Frank “The Tank” Onyeka helped drive them there.
