Remi Tinubu Breaks Silence on Viral Video with Osun Governor, Says Critics Amplify Minor Issues.

Nigeria's First Lady, Remi Tinubu, has responded to criticism over her interaction with Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke at the 10th coronation anniversary of the Ooni of Ife. A video of the incident showed her approaching Governor Adeleke, who was singing, and instructing him to stop, saying "Enough with the music, or I'll switch off the microphone" and "I give you 5 minutes to conclude". The governor briefly paused but continued singing, prompting Mrs. Tinubu to return to the podium and reiterate her directive.

The Incident

The exchange occurred during a cultural event where Mrs. Tinubu was honored with the chieftaincy title Yeye Asiwaju Gbogbo Ile Oodua. Many Nigerians condemned her actions as disrespectful to an elected governor, while others defended her, saying she was simply trying to maintain order.

Reactions

- Critics accused Mrs. Tinubu of being power-drunk and disrespecting the governor, with some comparing the incident to past controversies involving former First Lady Patience Jonathan.
- Defenders argued that Governor Adeleke's extended singing was inappropriate given the profile of attendees, but some faulted Mrs. Tinubu's approach.
- The incident has sparked a heated debate on social media, with many questioning the constitutionality of the First Lady's influence and the boundaries of her role.

In a Facebook post, Mrs. Tinubu described the backlash as "needless controversy" and urged Nigerians not to focus on minor missteps. She wrote, "Those entrusted with leadership understand their duties and how to steer the affairs of society. More often, it is the followers and critics who scrutinize every step, amplify minor missteps, and turn them into needless controversy" alongside a photo of herself with Governor Adeleke.
