Nigerian Military Officers Freed by Burkina Faso After Emergency Landing.
Burkina Faso has released 11 Nigerian military officers who were detained after their transport aircraft made an unauthorized landing in the country. The officers, including two crew members and nine other military personnel, were aboard a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) C-130 that landed in Bobo-Dioulasso on Monday due to a technical fault.
According to Burkinabè authorities, the plane entered the country's airspace without proper clearance, prompting an immediate security response. The Alliance of Sahel States (AES), which comprises Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, condemned the incident as an "unfriendly act" and placed its air forces on maximum alert.
The Nigerian government described the landing as a technical emergency and insisted that the crew followed standard safety procedures and international aviation protocols. The NAF stated that the personnel were treated well and have since returned to Nigeria.
This incident has strained relations between Nigeria and the AES, particularly following Nigeria's role in foiling a recent coup attempt in Benin Republic. The AES has taken a hard-line stance towards external military activity within the Sahel region since withdrawing from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
