Christmas Eve Blaze Hits Lagos Commercial Hub.

A massive fire broke out at the 22-storey Great Nigeria Insurance House on Martins Street, Lagos Island, on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2025, and raged for over 10 hours. The blaze, which started on the fourth or fifth floor, spread to at least four adjacent buildings, including a church and a mosque, causing widespread damage in one of Lagos' busiest commercial districts. The building, primarily used as a warehouse and retail outlet for clothing materials, was engulfed in flames, with thick plumes of smoke and bright orange flames visible from a distance.

Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Federal Fire Service, and Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, arrived at the scene within 12 minutes of the distress call, but the fire's spread was exacerbated by poor storage practices and crowd control issues. Seven people were hospitalized with burn injuries, while five others were treated for smoke inhalation.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu urged residents to remain calm, assuring them that the situation was under control. The cause of the fire is still unknown, and investigations are ongoing.
