Burkina Faso Detains 11 Nigerian Military Officers, Seizes NAF Aircraft Over Alleged Airspace Violation.
Nigeria's reaction to the detention of its military personnel by Burkina Faso has been calm and diplomatic. After a Nigerian Air Force C-130 aircraft made an emergency landing in Bobo-Dioulasso without clearance, Burkina Faso authorities detained the 11 personnel on board, citing a violation of national sovereignty and airspace regulations.
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) maintained that the landing was due to a technical fault and followed international aviation safety procedures. NAF spokesperson Ehimen Ejodame stated that the crew was safe and received cordial treatment from the host authorities.
The incident has strained relations between Nigeria and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), which comprises Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. The AES has taken a hard-line stance towards external military activity within the Sahel region since withdrawing from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
