Guinea-Bissau general sworn in as transition president after military coup
General Horta Nta Na Man has been sworn in as the transitional president of Guinea-Bissau, following a military coup that ousted President Umaro Sissoco Embalo. The ceremony took place at the military headquarters in Bissau.
The military officers announced they had seized power, citing alleged corruption and electoral manipulation. General Nta Na Man is expected to lead the country for a transitional period of one year.
The African Union and West African regional bloc ECOWAS have condemned the coup, calling for the immediate release of President Embalo and other detained officials. Embalo has confirmed his ouster and is reportedly being held at a military base.
Guinea-Bissau has a history of political instability, with at least nine coups and attempted coups since gaining independence from Portugal in 1974.
