Edo Rep Condemns Iyaloja Title, Cites Cultural Insensitivity"

A member of the House of Representatives representing Egor and Ikpoba-Okha Federal Constituency in Edo State, Hon. Murphy Omoruyi, has condemned the introduction of the Iyaloja title in the state, describing it as an insult to the revered Benin throne. The lawmaker's stance comes amid growing controversy over the title, which is not part of Benin tradition.

According to Hon. Omoruyi, the introduction of the Iyaloja title is a clear disregard for the cultural and historical heritage of the Benin Kingdom. He emphasized that the Benin Kingdom has its own traditional titles and structures, and the imposition of an alien title is an affront to the authority of the Oba.

The Oba of Benin has also rejected the introduction of the Iyaloja title, affirming that it is not part of Benin culture. Instead, the Benin Kingdom recognizes the Iyeki title, which is deeply rooted in the kingdom's customs and is closely associated with the palace.

The controversy surrounding the Iyaloja title has sparked widespread debate, with many calling for respect for Benin's cultural heritage. Market women in Benin have also protested against the introduction of the title, insisting that leadership of market women should traditionally remain with Benin natives.

Hon. Omoruyi has urged Governor Monday Okpebholo to annul the purported installation and bring those behind it to account. The lawmaker's stance has been seen as a call to protect the cultural identity and traditions of the Benin Kingdom.
