Mali follows Niger, Burkina Faso, exits French-speaking nations group.

Junta-run Mali, which has broken off ties with France, announced Tuesday it was quitting an international group of French-speaking countries, a day after its allies Niger and Burkina Faso did the same. “Mali cannot remain a member of an organisation whose actions are incompatible with constitutional principles… based on the sovereignty of the state,” the foreign ministry said in a letter to its French counterpart, referring to the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF). Mali was suspended from the organisation — a post-colonial entity that resembles the Commonwealth — in August 2020 after a military coup, which toppled its president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita. The OIF had called for the release of Keita, in power since 2013 at the helm of the west African country, which for years has faced a security, political and economic crisis ,It had also called for the speedy setting up of a transition government led by civilians. On Monday, fellow junta-led states Burkina Faso and Nige...

Ex-Madrid midfielder, Mesut Ozil banned from former club.

Image
Former Madrid midfielder, Mesut Ozil, has been banned from former club Werder Bremen. The Bundesliga club will not welcome the 36-year-old due to a controversial tattoo that has links with far-right groups. During his playing career, Ozil turned out for Arsenal, Real Madrid, Werder Bremen, Fenerbahce and Schalke. The German retired from the game in June 2023 at the age of 34. However, it seems Ozil is not welcome back at Werder Bremen after showing off a tattoo featuring a grey wolf and a flag with three crescent moons. The symbols have links to far-right groups promoting anti-semitism, far-right extremism and ultra-nationalism. Ozil’s tattoo means he was recently left off a guest list by Werder Bremen for a tribute to former star Diego Ribas, according to Bild. Ribas and Ozil played together at Bremen before the playmaker sealed a move to Real Madrid in 2010.

Life imprisonment for Nigeria’s merchants .

Image
There are several merchants of death prowling the nooks and crannies of Nigeria. They range from bandits, kidnappers, ritual murderers, and manufacturers of fake and substandard products. All of them deserve severe punishment including life imprisonment at the correctional centres. I shudder reading the press statement by the Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, on the recent efforts of her agency to rid Nigeria of fake, expired and substandard drugs. NAFDAC said it evacuated over 100 truckloads of substandard, falsified, and banned medicines and narcotics from the Idumota Market in Lagos State, Onitsha Market in Anambra State, and Aba Market in Abia State, in six weeks. The NAFDAC director general said if the substandard and banned medicines were allowed in circulation, they could ruin the nation by reducing the quality of life of millions of Nigerians. Adeyeye made the remarks in Lagos on Friday, March 14, 2025, at ...

Lagos-Calabar coastal highway will fulfil Tinubu’s vision, Oladipo tells Obasanjo.

Obasanjo. A frontline businessman, Otunba Tolani Oladipo, has said the N15.6tn Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, being built by Gilbert Chagoury’s Hitech Construction Limited, will help President Bola Tinubu to achieve his vision of making Nigeria a trillion-dollar economy by 2030. In a statement on Sunday, Tolani responded to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s critique of the project. In his recent memoir, ‘Nigeria: Past and Future,’ Obasanjo said the highway, conceived more than 50 years ago, was wasteful and corrupt. The former president’s critique has attracted a deluge of criticisms from The Presidency and Ohanaeze Ndigbo, among others, which felt the project is a legacy project that would expand the nation’s economy and give jobs to many Nigerians. Tolani joined the fray against Obasanjo and said the highway would be a blessing rather than a course, explaining, “By the time it is finished, this highway will shorten travel time between the Southwest and South-South by more than 35%...
