FLAMINGOS SOAR! NIGERIA HUMILIATE MEXICO TO BOOK WORLD CUP QUARTER-FINAL TICKET.
By Desmond
Nigeria's U-17 women's national team, the Flamingos, have continued to make the nation proud after defeating Mexico 2–1 to secure a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Morocco.
The Nigerian youngsters delivered an impressive performance in their Round of 16 encounter on Thursday, October 29, demonstrating determination, attacking quality and resilience to overcome their Mexican opponents.
The victory keeps Nigeria's dream of lifting the prestigious trophy alive.
Umejiaku fires Nigeria ahead
Oluebube Umejiaku opened the scoring in the 40th minute with a brilliant individual effort.
The Nigerian forward showed outstanding composure and skill to beat Mexican defenders before firing past the goalkeeper.
Her goal gave the Flamingos a deserved advantage heading into the
half-time break.
Dunstan doubles the advantage
Nigeria continued their impressive display after the restart, refusing to surrender their attacking momentum.
Mary Dunstan increased the lead in the 71st minute, finishing brilliantly to put the Flamingos 2–0 ahead.
Mexico eventually pulled one back through Emily Delgado in the 90th minute plus 10, setting up a tense finish.
However, the Nigerian girls remained composed and defended their advantage until the final whistle.
The 2–1 victory confirmed Nigeria's qualification for the last eight.
Venezuela stand between Flamingos and semi-finals
The Flamingos will now face Venezuela in the quarter-finals on Sunday, November 1, with a semi-final ticket at stake.
Venezuela booked their place after eliminating Germany.
Nigeria will be hoping to continue their impressive campaign and repeat their historic achievement of reaching the semi-finals, where they won bronze at the 2022 edition in India.
The victory over Mexico follows another remarkable performance against defending champions DPR Korea, whom Nigeria defeated 3–1 in their final group match.
The Flamingos are increasingly looking like serious contenders in Morocco.
MY VIEW
These girls deserve national recognition. They have demonstrated courage, discipline and the Nigerian fighting spirit.
The government and football authorities must give them the necessary support and motivation. Nigeria should not wait until these young talents win a trophy before celebrating them.
One more victory, girls! Bring the trophy home!
