Pig Kidneys Successfully Transplanted Into Humans.

The transplantation of genetically modified pig kidneys into humans is one of the most remarkable developments in modern medicine. For decades, scientists have investigated whether animal organs could be used to help people suffering from organ failure. Recent breakthroughs suggest that this idea may be moving from scientific theory toward a practical medical option.
A major milestone was achieved in the United States when doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital transplanted a genetically edited pig kidney into a human patient. One of the most significant cases involved Tim Andrews, who received a genetically engineered pig kidney in January 2025. According to researchers at Mass General Brigham, the kidney functioned well enough to keep Andrews off dialysis for 271 days. In January 2026, he subsequently received a human donor kidney. His case was reported in The Lancet and represents the longest documented dialysis-free survival following a pig-kidney transplant in a living human, as well as the first reported transition from a pig kidney to a human kidney.
The achievement is possible because the pigs are not genetically ordinary pigs. Scientists use genetic engineering to make their organs more compatible with the human immune system. The kidney used in the first major Massachusetts General Hospital transplant had 69 genomic edits, designed to reduce the likelihood of rejection and address potential risks associated with animal-to-human transplantation.
Another important development reported in September 2026 is that a woman who received a genetically engineered pig kidney at Massachusetts General Hospital in November 2025 had lived with the organ for 285 days without dialysis, surpassing Andrews' previous record. The kidney was developed using CRISPR gene-editing technology.
These developments could have enormous implications because there is a serious shortage of human donor kidneys. Thousands of patients around the world spend years waiting for a suitable organ, while many depend on dialysis to remain alive. If genetically engineered pig kidneys can reliably function in humans, they could potentially provide organs when human donors are unavailable.
In my view, this is a very encouraging breakthrough and could change the future of organ transplantation. I believe the greatest benefit may initially be using pig kidneys as a temporary bridge for patients waiting for a human donor. The experience of Tim Andrews demonstrates that a genetically engineered pig kidney can provide meaningful kidney function for many months and allow a patient to remain free from dialysis while waiting.
However, I do not think we should describe pig kidneys as a fully established replacement for human kidneys yet. The technology remains experimental, and researchers still need to understand long-term rejection, blood-vessel complications, infection risks and the effects of lifelong treatment. Andrews' pig kidney eventually developed microvascular injury and failed after 271 days, although he later received a human kidney successfully.

Overall, the successful transplantation of genetically engineered pig kidneys into humans is a genuine medical breakthrough. It does not mean that pig kidneys are already a routine treatment, but it provides strong evidence that xenotransplantation could eventually help solve the shortage of human organs and save many lives.
