Osun Police Arrest Woman as Vigilante Member Dies After Sexual Encounter.

The Osun State Police Command has reportedly arrested a woman following the death of a vigilante member after a sexual encounter in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

The incident, which occurred in the Odi-Olokun/Ooni Ilare area of Ile-Ife, has generated public interest and speculation after the deceased, identified as Sunday and popularly known as Apetu, reportedly became seriously distressed shortly after the encounter.

According to reports, the incident occurred on Sunday, September 6, 2026. The man was said to have developed severe health complications and was reportedly gasping and screaming before he eventually died.

Following the incident, the woman involved was taken into police custody at the Moore Police Division as authorities commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

Reports also indicate that the deceased's remains were deposited at the mortuary of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, pending further investigation and medical examination.

The incident has, however, taken a more controversial turn following claims by some residents that the vigilante member may have died as a result of what they described as a “thunderbolt.” The claim appears to be rooted in traditional or spiritual interpretations of sudden death.

However, there is no official medical or scientific evidence currently confirming that a thunderbolt caused the man's death. Authorities have reportedly urged the public to avoid drawing conclusions from unverified claims while the investigation continues.

My View

In my view, this incident deserves to be handled with caution and responsibility. A sudden death following a sexual encounter can understandably generate rumours, particularly where cultural and traditional beliefs are involved. However, allegations should not be presented as established facts until investigators and medical professionals determine what actually happened.

The arrest of the woman should also not be interpreted as proof that she caused the man's death. Being taken into police custody allows investigators to question those involved and establish the sequence of events. It does not amount to a declaration of guilt.

This is particularly important because sensational claims can quickly spread on social media and potentially damage the reputation of people who may have had no involvement in the death.

The appropriate next step is for the police to conduct a thorough investigation, while medical professionals determine the actual cause of death. If an autopsy or other medical examination establishes a natural, medical, toxicological or criminal cause, that evidence should guide the investigation.

The “thunderbolt” claim should therefore remain exactly that — a claim attributed to some residents, not a confirmed cause of death.
