Yaya Touré Makes History as First African Manager in UCL League Phase.

Yaya Touré has written another remarkable chapter in African football history, this time from the touchline. The Ivory Coast legend has become the first African manager to lead a club into the UEFA Champions League league phase after guiding Slovan Bratislava through a dramatic qualifying campaign.

The historic achievement was sealed on Wednesday night when Slovan Bratislava defeated Slovenian side NK Celje 2–1 after extra time in the second leg of their final qualifying-round tie. The Slovakian champions progressed 3–2 on aggregate, earning their place among Europe's elite clubs and giving Touré a landmark achievement in his first senior managerial appointment.

The decisive moment came in the 100th minute. Andraž Šporar had put Slovan ahead in the 18th minute, but Celje responded through Svit Šešlar's penalty in the 34th minute. With the tie delicately poised, Cristian Martínez produced the breakthrough in extra time, sending Slovan through and sparking unforgettable celebrations.

For Touré, the achievement carries enormous significance. The former Manchester City and Barcelona midfielder is one of Africa's most decorated footballers, but his transition into management has been watched with particular interest. After retiring from playing, he gained coaching experience in several roles, including assistant positions and work with Tottenham Hotspur's academy before finally receiving his opportunity as a senior head coach.

That opportunity has arrived with spectacular results.

Touré took charge of Slovan Bratislava during the summer, and his impact has been immediate. The club entered the Champions League qualifying rounds and successfully navigated a demanding route involving Saburtalo, Mjällby and finally Celje. Slovan have also made an impressive start domestically, remaining unbeaten in their opening league matches.

The achievement also builds on the pioneering work of Nigerian coach Ndubuisi Egbo. In 2020, Egbo became the first African coach to win a Champions League match when he led Albanian club KF Tirana to victory in qualifying. However, Tirana failed to reach the main phase of the competition. Touré has now gone one historic step further.

This distinction matters beyond Touré himself. African football has produced generations of outstanding players, but African coaches have historically faced greater barriers to securing opportunities at the highest levels of European club football. Touré's success therefore represents more than a personal milestone; it is another powerful reminder that African coaching talent can succeed on Europe's biggest stage.

There is also something poetic about the achievement. Touré conquered the Champions League as a player with Barcelona during the 2008–09 season. Years later, he has returned to the competition in a completely different capacity — as the man responsible for preparing, motivating and leading his own team.

The journey, however, is only beginning. Slovan Bratislava will now discover their opponents in the Champions League league phase, where Touré will face the challenge of competing against some of the most powerful clubs in world football.
