TRISHULI TURNS TERRIFYING: NEPAL’S RAGING RIVER SWELLS AFTER HEAVY RAINS.

The Trishuli River in Nepal has swollen dramatically following heavy rainfall, raising concerns about flooding, dangerous river conditions and the safety of communities living along its banks. The powerful rise in water levels highlights once again the destructive force of extreme weather in the Himalayan nation.

According to a report by the BBC, heavy rain has caused the Trishuli River to surge, transforming the normally busy waterway into a potentially hazardous torrent. The river is an important part of Nepal’s landscape and economy, but its rapid response to intense rainfall can create serious risks for people, roads, bridges and other infrastructure near the river.

Nepal is particularly vulnerable to heavy rainfall and flooding because of its mountainous terrain. During periods of intense rain, water can accumulate rapidly and flow through steep valleys, causing rivers to rise quickly. Such conditions can leave communities with little time to respond, especially when transport routes and communication systems are disrupted.

The swelling of the Trishuli is also a reminder of the dangers faced by people who depend on rivers for transportation, tourism and livelihoods. The river is well known for activities such as rafting, attracting visitors who come to experience its strong currents and dramatic scenery. However, extreme weather can turn those same currents into a serious threat.

Heavy rainfall can also trigger landslides in Nepal’s mountainous regions. When saturated soil and rocks become unstable, landslides may block roads or damage settlements and infrastructure. Combined with rapidly rising rivers, these hazards can make already difficult conditions even more dangerous.

In my view, the swelling of the Trishuli River should be treated as a serious warning rather than simply a dramatic natural event. Heavy rainfall is something Nepal experiences regularly, but communities need strong early-warning systems and effective emergency planning to reduce the loss of lives and property.

Authorities should ensure that people living near rivers receive timely warnings whenever water levels begin to rise. Roads, bridges and other infrastructure should also be regularly inspected and strengthened where necessary. Most importantly, people should avoid approaching swollen rivers simply to watch or photograph the water. A river that appears spectacular can become deadly within minutes.

The situation also demonstrates the importance of preparedness in the face of increasingly unpredictable weather. Governments and communities cannot prevent heavy rain, but they can reduce its impact through better planning, public education and reliable emergency-response systems.

The Trishuli River’s dramatic rise is therefore more than a striking image of nature’s power. It is a reminder that extreme weather can quickly threaten lives and livelihoods. Nepal must continue strengthening its ability to prepare for, respond to and recover from such events.
