Osun Decides: Davido Accuses Soldiers of Blocking His Entry — Is This Security or Political Intimidation?
The ongoing Osun State governorship election has taken a dramatic turn after Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, alleged that soldiers were trying to prevent him from entering the state on election day. The allegation has immediately stirred controversy, with Nigerians divided over whether the incident represents a legitimate election-security measure or an attempt to restrict a politically influential citizen.
Davido made the allegation on his verified X account, saying he had been reliably informed that soldiers were trying to stop him from entering Osun. He argued that every Nigerian has the right to move freely.
However, there is an important part of the story that should not be ignored. Security agencies had already announced a restriction of movement across Osun State from midnight on Friday, August 14, until 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, as part of arrangements for the governorship election. The restriction was intended to limit movement and help security agencies protect voters, electoral officials and election materials.
This is where the situation becomes complicated.
My view is that both sides have legitimate questions to answer. Davido should not automatically be treated as above the law simply because he is a famous musician or because he is related to Governor Ademola Adeleke. At the same time, security agencies must be transparent about how the movement restriction is being enforced. If the restriction applies to everyone, officials should clearly explain why Davido was stopped and whether he was being treated in accordance with the same rules applicable to other citizens.
What would be dangerous is allowing political affiliation to determine who can move and who cannot.
Davido is not merely an entertainer in this election. He is the nephew of the incumbent governor and has openly participated in his uncle's campaign. That political connection naturally means that his movements during the election will attract attention.
But that should make the authorities more transparent, not less.
Election security is necessary. Nobody should argue against measures designed to prevent violence, intimidation, vote buying or disruption of the electoral process. Yet security measures must also be applied fairly. If soldiers are deployed to enforce a lawful movement restriction, citizens deserve to know the rules and the reasons for enforcement.
Personally, I think Davido was right to raise the alarm if he genuinely believed he was being singled out. However, an allegation on social media is not enough to establish wrongdoing. There should be an independent and factual explanation of what happened at the checkpoint, who ordered the restriction and whether the same rule was applied to others attempting to enter Osun.
The bigger issue is not Davido.
The bigger issue is whether Nigerians can trust security agencies to remain neutral during elections.
If the military acted within the law, it should have nothing to fear from public scrutiny. If, however, security personnel deliberately targeted Davido because of his political association, that would raise a serious question about electoral fairness.
For me, Osun election security should protect democracy, not become a tool for political intimidation. Fame should not give anyone special privileges, but neither should political differences make someone a target.
The best response now is not more social-media warfare. Nigerians deserve facts, accountability and a clear explanation from the relevant authorities.
