Minister Umahi Sues Linda Ikeji, Others for N2.5bn Over Alleged Defamation.
ABUJA — Minister of Works, David Umahi, has instituted a N2.5 billion defamation suit against media personality Linda Ikeji, Linda Ikeji TV Limited and Stella Ifeoma Okengwu over publications and videos he alleges damaged his reputation.
The suit, marked GWD/CV/264/26, was filed on August 24, 2026, at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja Judicial Division.
According to the case summary reported by The Guardian Nigeria, Umahi alleged that the defendants published statements and videos concerning him between March 2025 and March 2026 which he described as false, malicious and defamatory.
The minister claimed that some of the publications accused him of bribery, corruption, intimidation, sexual misconduct, land grabbing, sexual harassment and being unfit to hold public office.
Umahi said he had previously, through his lawyers, demanded that the alleged defamatory materials be removed and that the defendants issue an unreserved public apology. According to the case summary, the demands were not complied with, prompting him to approach the court.
Among the reliefs sought by the minister is a declaration that the publications complained of are defamatory. He is also asking the court to order the defendants to remove the materials from their social media platforms and other media outlets where they were published.
Umahi further wants the court to compel the defendants to issue a public apology and grant a permanent injunction restraining them, their agents or representatives from publishing what he considers false and defamatory statements against him.
The minister is seeking N500 million in general damages and N2 billion in exemplary damages. He is also asking for N500 million as the cost of prosecuting the suit, while seeking 10 per cent annual post-judgment interest on any judgment sum until full payment.
The case was filed by a legal team led by A.J. Owonikoko, SAN, alongside other Senior Advocates of Nigeria from Synergy Attorneys.
The case summary indicated that the defendants had not been served with the writ at the time the document was prepared.
