VARgentina" Storm: Petition Against Argentina's World Cup Run Hits 6 Million Signatures

Just 12 hours before their World Cup semifinal against England, Argentina are facing their toughest opponent yet: public opinion.

A global petition demanding FIFA investigate controversial refereeing decisions in Argentina’s matches has now risen to over 6 million signatures, turning what should be a celebration of the defending champions’ run into one of the biggest officiating controversies in World Cup history.

From Champions to "VARgentina"
For weeks, social media has called them *"VARgentina"*. The nickname stuck after two straight knockout games where Video Assistant Referee decisions dramatically swung in Argentina’s favor.

The term floods TikTok, X, and Facebook. Memes show FIFA President Gianni Infantino wearing Argentina’s sky-blue stripes. Others show Lionel Messi being pushed in a toy car toward the trophy. For fans in Egypt, Switzerland, and England, the joke isn’t funny anymore.

"Whether you believe the reigning champions have earned every break or benefited from remarkable circumstances depends largely on which jersey you wear," one analyst wrote ahead of the semifinal. "But no semifinalist has generated more debate over how it got here."

The Two Matches That Broke the Internet

Round of 16: Argentina 3-2 Egypt, Atlanta.
The Pharaohs were 15 minutes from the biggest upset of the tournament. Leading 2-0, they scored what looked like a third. The stadium erupted. Then VAR intervened. The goal was ruled out.

Argentina responded with three goals in 12 minutes, including a stoppage-time winner from Enzo FernΓ‘ndez. Egypt crashed out 3-2.

The Egyptian Football Association did not stay quiet. They filed an official complaint to FIFA the next day, "publicly questioning a number of decisions and expressing dissatisfaction with the performances of the referee and VAR". Players said it felt like "a courtroom drama where replay review always ended in Argentina’s favor".

Egypt legend Mohamed Aboutrika, who initially criticized the officiating, later surprised fans by saying "I hope Argentina qualifies for the World Cup final". But the damage was done. The petition started that night.

Quarterfinal: Argentina 3-1 Switzerland AET, Miami .
With the score at 1-1 in the 67th minute, Swiss forward Breel Embolo went down in the box. The referee gave Argentina’s Leandro Paredes a yellow. Then came a 3-minute VAR review.

The decision was overturned. Embolo was booked for simulation. It was his second yellow. Red card. Switzerland down to 10 men for the final 40 minutes plus extra time.

JuliΓ‘n Alvarez scored the winner in the 105th minute. Swiss officials called it "unacceptable". Swiss fans called it "theft". The petition signatures doubled overnight.

6 Million and Counting
The petition on http://Change.org, _"Review VAR Decisions in Argentina Matches - Fair Play for All"_, hit 1 million in 12 hours. It hit 3 million after the Switzerland game. As of Monday night, it stands at *6,042,317 signatures* and rising by about 200,000 per hour.

Signers come from 180+ countries. The top countries are Egypt, Switzerland, England, France, Brazil, and Portugal.

The demands are clear:
1.  A full FIFA review of all VAR decisions in Argentina’s knockout games
2.  Suspension of the match officials involved pending investigation
3.  A public commitment to neutral refereeing for the semifinals and final

"This is not about hating Argentina or Messi," one top comment with 400k likes reads. "This is about protecting the integrity of football."

FIFA Under Pressure
FIFA has remained silent. Former FIFA referee Christina Unkel told a sports network that "fan confidence is completely eroded right now".

The controversy has reached beyond fans. Media outlets in the UK, Egypt, and Switzerland have run front-page stories asking: _"Has the tournament been fixed for Argentina and Lionel Messi?"_

Defenders of Argentina say the outrage is selective. "France were awarded two penalties in the last World Cup final, yet nobody claimed the tournament was rigged for them," said one football analyst. "People are quick to call it 'rigged' when Argentina benefits."

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has refused to address the petition. "We only focus on football," he said in training. Lionel Messi has also not commented.
Argentina will play England on Wednesday night in Atlanta with a place in the Final against Spain at stake.

With 6 million signatures and an official FA complaint on FIFA’s desk, the pressure on the refereeing team for the semifinal will be immense. Every VAR check will be watched by millions.

For now, the petition keeps rising. Whether FIFA acts on it, and whether "VARgentina" can win a second World Cup in a row, are the two biggest questions in football.
