Tragedy has struck the Nigeria Police Force following a deadly bandit attack on officers travelling to Zamfara State to provide security for the All Progressives Congress (APC) rerun primary election.
The attack, which occurred along the Sokoto–Gusau highway, claimed the lives of five police officers after armed bandits reportedly ambushed their vehicle while they were travelling for the special security assignment.
According to reports, the officers were members of the Nigeria Police Force's Zone 10 Command in Sokoto. They were deployed to provide security for the APC rerun primary election in Zamfara North Senatorial District, scheduled to take place in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area.
The attackers reportedly opened fire on the vehicle conveying the officers, leaving several personnel dead and others injured.
The Nigeria Police Force subsequently confirmed the tragic incident, disclosing that five officers lost their lives in the attack.
The police also revealed that seven officers were rescued alive and unhurt, while two others sustained gunshot injuries and were taken to hospital for medical attention.
Furthermore, the attackers reportedly made away with five service AK-47 rifles following the ambush.
The police have since deployed tactical search and rescue teams, including personnel from the Violent Crime Response Unit and Anti-Kidnapping Unit, to the affected area.
The Force also disclosed that efforts were ongoing to recover the stolen firearms and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the persistent security challenges confronting communities and security personnel across Nigeria's North-West region.
Zamfara, in particular, has continued to experience attacks by armed groups, with travellers, rural communities and security operatives frequently exposed to danger.
The killing of the officers while travelling to perform an official assignment raises fresh concerns about the safety of personnel deployed to security-sensitive locations.
As investigations continue, Nigerians await further details from the police concerning the circumstances surrounding the ambush and measures being taken to prevent similar attacks.
The lives lost in the line of duty remain a painful reminder of the dangers confronting Nigeria's security forces.
