Why We Can’t Strike Despite Locating Kidnapped NYSC Members – Police

By Desmond

The Imo State Police Command has explained why security agencies have not immediately stormed the location where kidnapped prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members are believed to be held, despite reportedly identifying the suspected hideout.

The Imo State Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, said security operatives had succeeded in locating the area where the abducted corps members were being held.

According to the police, drones were deployed during the operation to track the movement of the kidnappers into a forested area. The surveillance reportedly helped security agencies obtain the coordinates of the suspected camp.

However, the police said an immediate assault on the location could put the lives of both the hostages and security personnel at serious risk.

Bosso explained that intelligence gathered by the security agencies indicated that the area had been mined with improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Because of the suspected explosives, security operatives have had to approach the operation with extreme caution rather than launching a direct attack.

The commissioner said preparations were being made to deploy specialised equipment, including bulldozers and armoured personnel carriers (APCs), to enable security forces to safely access the area.

The development comes after reports of the abduction of prospective corps members in Imo State. Security agencies have since intensified efforts to rescue those still being held and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Police authorities have also indicated that some of the victims have already been rescued, while efforts continue to establish the exact number of people still in captivity.

The police explanation highlights the challenges security agencies face when dealing with kidnappers operating in difficult terrain and allegedly protecting their hideouts with explosives.

Authorities have assured the public that efforts are ongoing to secure the safe release of the remaining victims while avoiding actions that could endanger their lives.

The operation remains active as security agencies work to clear the suspected explosive devices and gain safe access to the location.
