TRAGEDY! Five Feared Dead, 31 Injured as Explosions Rock Edo, Rivers Communities.

By Desmond

Tragedy has struck parts of Edo and Rivers states following separate explosions that reportedly left five people feared dead, injured at least 31 others, and destroyed houses, shops and other valuable property.

The incidents have raised fresh concerns about public safety and the dangers associated with gas pipeline leakages and petroleum tanker explosions in Nigeria.

According to reports published on Friday, October 16, 2026, one of the incidents occurred in Aleto community, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, where a gas pipeline explosion reportedly injured at least 20 people and destroyed about 50 houses.

The explosion occurred at approximately 5 p.m. on Thursday along Old Bori Road after a pipeline belonging to the Nigeria Gas Company reportedly ruptured, triggering a fire that spread to nearby buildings and business premises.

Several victims were reportedly rushed to hospitals for medical attention, while shops, vehicles and a mechanic workshop were also affected.

Residents expressed concern over allegations that the pipeline had been leaking for weeks before the explosion.

Daniel Chuma, Leader of the Eleme Legislative Council, said the community had previously raised concerns about pipeline leakages and contacted relevant authorities for intervention.

The incident has renewed calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the explosion and the measures taken to address the reported leakage.

Meanwhile, another explosion occurred in Oluku, Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State, where a petroleum tanker explosion reportedly injured 11 people, including a pregnant woman.

The injured victims were taken to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital for treatment.

Authorities and emergency responders have continued to face the challenge of preventing further casualties and protecting residents from dangerous incidents involving petroleum products and gas infrastructure.

The reported deaths and injuries have also highlighted the need for stronger safety enforcement, regular infrastructure inspections and quicker responses to reports of potential hazards.

MY VIEW

It is heartbreaking that Nigerians continue to suffer injuries, lose loved ones and watch their properties destroyed in preventable disasters. Whenever communities report dangerous pipeline leakages, the complaints must be treated with urgency. Relevant authorities and companies must investigate these incidents, establish accountability where negligence is proven, and ensure that affected victims receive the necessary assistance.
