RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — Tragedy has struck Saudi Arabia after a deadly attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh left 12 people dead and 309 others injured, sending shockwaves across the country and raising fresh concerns about escalating violence in the Middle East.

The attack, which occurred on Saturday, October 10, 2026, reportedly targeted part of the airport complex, resulting in civilian casualties, damage to airport facilities and a major disruption to flight operations.

According to Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA), 12 people lost their lives in the incident, while 309 others sustained injuries. Several of the injured were reported to be in critical condition and were receiving medical attention at hospitals.

The fatalities included four Saudi citizens, two Bangladeshi nationals and citizens of the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Sudan.

The incident has heightened fears among travellers and residents as authorities work to assess the damage and strengthen security around the affected facility.

AIRPORT OPERATIONS DISRUPTED

Following the attack, airport operations were temporarily suspended as officials assessed the situation and worked to ensure the safety of passengers and airport personnel.

Flights were reportedly diverted, leaving travellers facing uncertainty over their journeys. Emergency responders rushed to assist victims, while hospitals received injured people requiring urgent medical attention.

The scale of the casualties has made the incident one of the deadliest attacks on a Gulf Arab country since the outbreak of the wider regional conflict.

HOUTHIS UNDER SCRUTINY

Saudi authorities and a Saudi-led military coalition blamed Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement for the attack.

Coalition officials condemned the incident, describing the targeting of civilian infrastructure and the resulting casualties as a serious violation of international humanitarian law.

However, responsibility for the attack should be distinguished from independently verified facts, and any claims about those behind it must be assessed against reliable reporting and official statements.

The attack comes amid renewed fighting involving Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces and the Houthis, raising fears that the conflict could spread further across the region.

INTERNATIONAL CONCERN GROWS

The incident has attracted international attention because of the number of casualties and the potential consequences for civilian aviation and regional security.

The United States also expressed concern over the attacks, while officials considered possible responses to the escalating hostilities.

The suspension of airport operations and warnings about security have added pressure to an already tense situation, with concerns extending beyond Saudi Arabia to international airlines and passengers travelling through the region.

As investigations continue, authorities face the difficult task of determining the full circumstances of the attack, assessing the damage and ensuring that victims receive the necessary medical care.

For the families of those killed and the hundreds injured, the incident has brought devastating consequences. The coming days are expected to be crucial as Saudi authorities evaluate the security situation and consider their next steps.
