NDLEA Arrests 101-Year-Old Woman for Allegedly Selling Cannabis.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 101-year-old woman, identified as Esther Ogunmabo, for allegedly selling cannabis in Ilisan, Ogun State.

According to the NDLEA, Ogunmabo was arrested on August 15, 2026, with 90 grammes of skunk, a strain of cannabis, packaged in small sachets. The agency said the centenarian admitted selling the substance to local customers.

The NDLEA reported that the woman told investigators she became involved in the illicit drug trade after a fire destroyed her provisions shop. She also allegedly disclosed that one of her daughters, who lives in Lagos, supplied her with the cannabis every four days for resale.

Following her arrest, NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), directed that Ogunmabo be granted bail and placed under counselling because of her advanced age. Her daughter was also arrested in connection with the alleged drug trade.

The case is unusual because of the suspect's advanced age and raises important questions about poverty, vulnerability and access to social support for elderly Nigerians. While drug trafficking remains a serious offence, the decision to grant the 101-year-old woman bail and counselling appears to recognise the need for both law enforcement and compassion. Most importantly, the allegations should be treated as allegations unless and until established in court.
