Nineteen-year-old Nigerian-American racing driver Ugo Ugochukwu has made history after winning the 2026 FIA Formula 3 Drivers’ Championship, becoming the first American driver to claim the prestigious title.
Ugochukwu secured the championship at the season-ending Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid on Sunday, September 13, driving for Campos Racing. He finished second in the final race behind Finland’s Tuukka Taponen, while his main title rival, Britain’s Freddie Slater, finished eighth.
The result saw Ugochukwu finish the season with 159 points, 14 points ahead of Slater, who ended the campaign on 145 points. His 2026 season included two victories and seven podium finishes.
Born in New York to Nigerian model Oluchi Onweagba and Italian fashion designer Luca Orlandi, Ugochukwu has risen through the junior single-seater ranks with ambitions of reaching Formula 1. He previously competed as part of the McLaren Driver Development Programme before joining Campos Racing for the 2026 FIA Formula 3 season.

The championship marks a remarkable turnaround for Ugochukwu, who finished 16th in his rookie FIA Formula 3 campaign in 2025. He responded strongly in his second season, securing his maiden F3 victory in Melbourne before adding another win at Silverstone.
Ugochukwu’s breakthrough has also drawn attention in Nigeria because of his strong Nigerian heritage. Following his historic triumph, the teenager expressed pride in his Nigerian roots, adding another significant milestone to a promising racing career.
With Formula 3 serving as an important pathway to Formula 2 and eventually Formula 1, Ugochukwu’s championship victory could be a major step towards his ultimate ambition of competing at motorsport’s highest level.
