68-Year-Old British Woman Cries Out After Nigerian Husband, 36 Years Her Junior, Disappears.
A 68-year-old British woman, Dawn Ottewell, has spoken publicly about the breakdown of her marriage to a Nigerian man who is 36 years younger than her, claiming that he disappeared after moving to the United Kingdom.
Ottewell, a grandmother of seven from Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, met Bright Emokpae on dating apps in 2021. At the time, Bright was in his twenties and living in Cyprus. Despite their significant age difference, the relationship developed quickly, and the pair eventually married in Nicosia, Cyprus, in March 2022.
According to Ottewell, Bright initially gave her a different name and age before later revealing more about his identity. She acknowledged that these discrepancies should have raised concerns but said she was emotionally attached and believed his declarations of love were genuine.
After their marriage, Ottewell returned to Britain while Bright returned to Nigeria to process a spouse visa. About a year later, he joined her in the UK.
She now says that their relationship deteriorated after he arrived. Ottewell alleges that Bright became distant, made financial demands and sent money to Nigeria while contributing little to their household expenses. The couple separated in 2023 but later reconciled. She says their relationship eventually broke down again, and Bright left the home around Christmas 2024.
Ottewell claims she has been unable to locate him and believes he may be living in Scotland, where she says he appears to have started an online clothing business. She also believes that his immigration status may be connected to his refusal to complete their divorce.
Her biggest concern, however, is what could happen to her estate if she dies while they remain legally married. She says she fears her husband could have a claim to some of her possessions and that her children could lose part of what she intended to leave them.
Ottewell now regrets ignoring what she describes as early warning signs and has warned other people to exercise caution when entering relationships with partners they meet online, particularly when the relationship involves international travel, immigration and significant financial commitments.
My view: This story should not be used to conclude that an age-gap relationship or a Nigerian-foreign marriage is automatically a scam. People can genuinely fall in love despite differences in age, nationality or background. What concerns me in this particular case are the alleged inconsistencies about identity, the rapid progression from online dating to marriage, the financial disagreements and the unresolved immigration and divorce issues.

At the same time, Bright deserves the opportunity to give his side of the story. The accusation that someone married primarily for immigration benefits is serious and should not be presented as proven simply because one spouse believes it.

The real lesson is broader: love should never replace due diligence. Before marrying someone met online, couples should verify identities, discuss finances openly, understand immigration consequences and obtain independent legal advice. Romance can be genuine, but protecting oneself financially and legally is not a sign of distrust—it is common sense.
