TENANTS TURNED ABDUCTORS! Two Women Allegedly Lure Three Children From Home in Taraba.
What appeared to be an ordinary tenancy arrangement in Jalingo, Taraba State, allegedly turned into a frightening child-trafficking plot after two women suspected of human trafficking were arrested while attempting to take three young girls out of the state.
The incident, which has raised fresh concerns about the safety of children and the danger posed by strangers who gain access to residential communities, occurred in Jalingo. According to reports, the two suspects had reportedly rented a room in the same compound where the parents of the children lived about two weeks before the incident.
The women allegedly gained the confidence of the children's mothers before making their move.
On the morning of the incident, the suspects reportedly asked the mothers to allow the three girls to accompany them to the market. Instead, the women allegedly took the children to a motor park in Jalingo, where they arranged transportation towards Adamawa State.
Their alleged plan was reportedly interrupted when the commercial vehicle driver became suspicious. The driver noticed that the children did not appear to be related to the women and raised an alarm. Members of his transport union were alerted, and the matter was subsequently reported to the police.
Police operatives later arrested the two women at a filling station while they were travelling with the three girls. The children were rescued and taken to the Taraba State Police Command.
The girls, identified in reports as Ummul Shuaibu, Ummul Baba Gasal and Amina Abubakar, are between five and six years old. Their fathers were reportedly invited to the police headquarters to identify them, while their mothers were later brought in for further identification.
The emotional reunion reportedly left the children in tears as they rushed to their mothers after seeing them.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Taraba State Command, ASP Victor Mshelizah, confirmed the arrest of the two women and said investigations were ongoing.
To me, this incident is a serious reminder that child trafficking can begin with something as seemingly harmless as friendship, familiarity or tenancy. The alleged strategy of staying close to the victims' families before attempting to move the children makes the case particularly disturbing.

However, the suspects should be treated as alleged offenders until the investigation and legal process establish the facts. At the same time, the successful intervention by the transport worker and the police deserves recognition. It shows that vigilance by ordinary citizens can sometimes make the difference between a missing-child case and a successful rescue.
Parents and guardians should remain cautious about allowing children to leave with people they have not known and trusted for a considerable period, even when those individuals appear friendly or familiar.

The Taraba case should also serve as a wake-up call for stronger community vigilance and continued efforts by security agencies to combat child trafficking.
