Tears, Tributes as Nollywood Veteran Taiwo Hassan ‘Ogogo’ Is Laid to Rest in Ilaro.
ILARO, Ogun State — Tears and grief enveloped Ilaro, Ogun State, on Monday as family members, friends, colleagues, fans and residents gathered to bid a final farewell to veteran Nollywood actor, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo.
The 66-year-old Yoruba film icon was laid to rest in his hometown of Ilaro on Monday, August 24, 2026, barely 24 hours after his death was announced. The burial was conducted in accordance with Islamic rites.
His remains were brought to Ilaro, where the funeral prayers were held at the Asade Agunloye Pavilion Ground. The burial arrangements had been announced by veteran actor Jide Kosoko, who disclosed that a lying-in-state ceremony would also take place at the Pavilion.
The atmosphere at the burial ground was deeply emotional as mourners accompanied the remains of the respected actor to his final resting place. Islamic prayers were offered before his interment, with family members, colleagues and sympathisers paying their final respects.
Several prominent figures from the Nigerian film industry attended the burial, including Jide Kosoko, Yinka Quadri, Faithia Balogun, Femi Adebayo, Mr Latin, Ireti Osayemi, Toyosi Adesanya and Bisi Omo Logbalogba. Other actors, traditional figures, religious leaders and residents of Ilaro also gathered to honour the late actor.
One of the most emotional moments came when Ogogo’s longtime friend and colleague, Yinka Quadri, broke down in tears. Mourners were seen consoling the veteran actor as the reality of Ogogo’s death sank in.
The Chief Imam of Ilaro Central Mosque, Imam Tajudeen Mustapha-Adewunmi, described the widespread mourning as a reflection of Ogogo’s character and the impact he made during his lifetime. He said the actor’s death represented a major loss to the Yoruba movie industry and the Islamic community.

Ogogo, who began his acting career in 1981, spent more than four decades in the Nigerian entertainment industry. He became one of the recognisable faces of Yoruba-language cinema and was also known for his work as a filmmaker and traditional chant performer. He featured in hundreds of productions during his career, including the 2022 film Aníkúlápó.
His burial brought together the entertainment community and residents of Ilaro in a solemn farewell to one of the town’s most prominent sons.
As the crowd gradually dispersed after the funeral rites, the mood remained sombre, with many mourners reflecting on Ogogo’s long career and the legacy he leaves behind in Yoruba cinema.
