Alleged Organ Harvesting: Police Parade Two Doctors, Two Others in Nasarawa state.

The alleged discovery of an organ-harvesting syndicate in Nasarawa State has raised serious concerns about the safety of vulnerable Nigerians and the need for stronger oversight of medical facilities involved in transplant-related procedures.

The Nigeria Police Force recently paraded four suspects, including two medical doctors, in connection with an alleged kidney-harvesting and human-trafficking operation in Nasarawa State. The suspects were identified as Dr Benjamin Oyime, a nephrologist and consultant at Wellington Hospital in Abuja; Dr Daniel Otukpa, also a nephrologist and Acting Director of Clinical Services at the hospital; Emmanuel Ode; and David Idoko.

According to the police, the suspects were arrested on August 19, 2026, during a special tactical operation in Auta Balifi, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. Investigators alleged that the group was involved in recruiting vulnerable individuals and arranging for their kidneys to be removed under questionable circumstances.

Police further alleged that one of the victims, identified as 22-year-old Samuel Ezekiel, was taken to Wellington Hospital on April 24, 2026, where one of his kidneys was allegedly removed. Investigators claimed that he was paid about $1,250, equivalent to approximately ₦1.7 million, following the procedure.

Another alleged victim reportedly told investigators that he had been recruited in 2022 and received ₦7 million after his kidney was removed. The police also alleged that the syndicate used fraudulent documents, including forged National Identification Number records, birth certificates, affidavits and age declarations, to facilitate the alleged procedures.

In my view, the allegations are deeply disturbing because organ transplantation is a medical procedure that should be governed by strict ethical, legal and professional standards. If the allegations are proven in court, those responsible should face the full force of the law, regardless of their professional status.

What makes the situation particularly troubling is the alleged involvement of medical professionals. Doctors are expected to protect life, uphold professional ethics and put the welfare of patients above financial gain. Therefore, if medical practitioners are found to have knowingly participated in illegal organ removal or the exploitation of vulnerable people, the matter should not be treated simply as another criminal case. It would represent a serious breach of public trust and medical ethics.

At the same time, it is important to stress that the suspects have not been convicted. The allegations made by the police must be properly investigated, and the accused persons must have the opportunity to defend themselves before a competent court. Public concern should not replace due process.

The case also highlights the vulnerability of people who are desperate for money. Economic hardship can make individuals susceptible to traffickers who may promise financial assistance while concealing the risks and consequences of medical procedures. Stronger public awareness is therefore necessary, particularly among young people and economically disadvantaged communities.

The relevant health authorities and professional bodies should also investigate the allegations independently. Any hospital or medical professional found to have violated transplant laws or ethical standards should face appropriate sanctions.

Ultimately, this case should serve as a warning that the fight against human trafficking and illegal organ harvesting requires cooperation between the police, hospitals, regulatory agencies, medical professionals and the public. Nigerians must be able to seek medical care without fear that their vulnerability will be exploited.

The police investigation should therefore be allowed to run its course, while the courts determine the facts. If the allegations are substantiated, justice must be swift and firm. If they are not, the accused must equally be protected from unjust punishment.
