Adeleke's Accord party defeats APC in Oyinlola's polling unit ;A political Earthquake.
The political temperature in Osun State rose sharply on Saturday as Governor Ademola Adeleke’s Accord Party delivered one of the most sensational results of the 2026 governorship election—defeating the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the polling unit of former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola in Okuku, Odo-Otin Local Government Area.
At Polling Unit 003, Ward 01, Court Hall 1, the Accord Party polled 125 votes, while the APC recorded 85 votes, giving Adeleke a 40-vote advantage. The result was particularly striking because Oyinlola had recently withdrawn his support for Adeleke and endorsed the APC candidate, Bola Oyebamiji.

In my view, this is more than just a victory of 40 votes. It is a powerful political message. A polling unit is normally expected to reflect, at least to some extent, the influence of a prominent political figure. When that influence fails to translate into votes, politicians should pay attention.
Oyinlola is not an ordinary political figure in Osun. He governed the state and has built political relationships over many years. Therefore, losing his own polling unit to the candidate he had openly opposed is politically embarrassing and, at the same time, instructive.
However, I would not interpret this single result as proof that Adeleke has already won the entire election. A polling unit is only a small part of a statewide contest. The real story will emerge when all results are collated and officially declared.

What the result does show, however, is that political endorsements do not automatically translate into votes. Voters ultimately make their own choices. A respected political leader can campaign for a candidate, but the people at the polling booth still have the final say.
For me, the biggest lesson from this development is that Nigerian politics is becoming increasingly unpredictable. Old political structures and established loyalties can no longer be taken for granted. The electorate may listen to political leaders, but they can also choose to vote according to their own interests, convictions and assessment of the candidates.
The result should therefore serve as a warning to every political heavyweight: in a democracy, influence can persuade, but only voters can deliver victory.
The Osun election is still unfolding, and every result matters. But Adeleke’s victory at Oyinlola’s polling unit has already produced one of the most memorable political headlines of the day.
Sometimes, the loudest political statement is not made on a campaign podium—it is made at the ballot box.
