AC Milan Icon Franco Baresi Passes Away at 66.

AC Milan is in mourning following the death of club legend Franco Baresi, who passed away on July 31 at the age of 66.

The Rossoneri confirmed the news on Friday, describing it as a devastating loss for the club and football world.

“The entire history of AC Milan is in tears following the passing of Franco Baresi. His example and integrity will be forever etched into the Club’s DNA, just as his iconic number 6 shirt is,” the club wrote on X.

Baresi spent his entire 20-year playing career at AC Milan from 1978 to 1997. He captained the side for 15 seasons and led one of the greatest teams in football history to 6 Serie A titles and 3 European Cups. 

At international level, he was also part of Italy’s 1982 World Cup winning squad. 

In recognition of his service, Milan retired his No.6 shirt at the end of his career — making him the first player in club history to receive that honor. In 1999, he was named AC Milan’s ‘Player of the Century’.

Baresi had faced health challenges in recent years. Last year the club announced he underwent surgery to remove a pulmonary nodule and began immunotherapy treatment. 

He made his final public appearance in February as one of the torchbearers at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics opening ceremony.

Tributes have poured in from across football. 

Former teammate and Milan legend Paolo Maldini wrote on Instagram:  
_“You taught me to fight until my very last breath, what it means to be devoted to the shirt. You protected me when I was a child, guided me as a teenager and inspired me as a man.”_

Clarence Seedorf added:  
_“Franco Baresi — football legend, great man, and unforgettable Captain — has left us far too soon. Your legacy will live on, inspiring generations well beyond the football pitch.”_

Baresi later served as Milan’s honorary vice president. He leaves behind a legacy of loyalty, leadership and elegance that defined an era.
